Artificial Intelligence Policy

Bayan: Jurnal Studi Islam dan Humaniora recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI technologies, may be used during various stages of research and scholarly writing. The journal supports the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI in accordance with the principles of academic integrity.

This policy aims to ensure that the use of AI does not diminish authors’ intellectual responsibility or compromise the quality and reliability of scholarly publications.

Use of AI by authors

Authors may use AI tools for purposes such as:

grammar and spelling correction;
language improvement;
writing style enhancement;
translation assistance;
organizing ideas or manuscript structure.

However, AI must not be used to generate research data, fabricate results, create nonexistent references, or produce scientific interpretations without author verification.

Authors remain fully responsible for the entire content of their manuscripts, including the accuracy of data, analyses, interpretations, citations, and conclusions.

Disclosure of AI use

Authors must disclose any use of AI in the preparation of their manuscripts. The disclosure should be included in the Acknowledgments, Methods, or another appropriate section of the manuscript.

Example statement:

“The authors used ChatGPT (OpenAI) to assist with language editing and improving the clarity of the manuscript. All scientific content, analysis, interpretation, and conclusions were developed and verified by the authors.”

Editors may request additional information regarding AI use when necessary.

AI cannot be listed as an author

AI systems and generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the content of a scholarly article, approve the final manuscript, or fulfill authorship accountability requirements.

Citation of AI-generated content

Authors are discouraged from citing AI-generated outputs as primary scholarly sources. When AI use is mentioned, it should be described as a writing or language assistance tool rather than as a substitute for verifiable academic literature.

Use of AI by reviewers

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts under review to public AI systems or third-party AI platforms, as doing so may violate manuscript confidentiality and authors’ intellectual property rights.

Peer review must be conducted independently, and all review materials must remain confidential.

Use of AI by editors

Editors may use AI tools in a limited capacity for purposes such as:

language checking;
text similarity detection;
identifying technical issues;
administrative support.

However, editorial decisions, scientific evaluation, ethical assessment, and acceptance or rejection decisions remain entirely the responsibility of the editors.

Violations of the AI policy

Undisclosed AI use, AI-assisted data fabrication, plagiarism, citation manipulation, or other violations of research integrity may result in editorial actions, including:
